How To Get Rid Of A Carpet Stain Using Common Items In Your Home

A stain in your carpeting can be a huge eyesore to everyone in your home due to the attention it draws. Carpet stains give the impression that a home is not clean, which can project a negative image onto you as the homeowner. The best way to fight stains is to clean them immediately after they happen, but you may not have a bottle of the a commercially made carpet cleaning solution available. Thankfully, there is a cleaning solution you can make on your own that uses some simple ingredients you most likely have in your home. This will help clean the stain fast before it sets in.

Tools & Materials

Start by gathering the following items from around your home:

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Vinegar
  • Rags
  • Baking soda
  • Spray bottle

Cleaning The Stain

Step 1: If you do not have an extra spray bottle on hand, you can use an existing one from another cleaning solution. Just be sure to clean out the spray bottle in order to make sure that there are no other chemicals left in it. Then you can fill up the bottle with some vinegar. You do not need to fill the bottle to the top, only pour in enough to cover the stain.

Step 2: Lightly spray the vinegar onto the stain with your spray bottle. You want to cover the entire stained area of your carpeting but not soak it. Follow up by sprinkling some baking soda on the damp area. Be sure to only apply a light layer of the baking soda. Adding too much could cause a chemical reaction that spreads to the surrounding carpeting.

Step 3: Allow the baking soda to soak in for about 5 to 10 minutes. You will notice the mixture will bubble and create odor, which is completely normal.

Step 4: You can use your rags for wiping up the mixture of vinegar and baking soda from the carpeting. Firmly press the rag into the carpeting to absorb the liquid deep within the carpet fibers.

Step 5: Run your vacuum over the stain to clean up excess baking soda in the carpeting. When finished, the stain will have gone away or be noticeably lighter.
